At Higher Level Learning, we can introduce aspects of game based learning (gamification, applied game design and many more names to boot…), to ensure that the elearning courses we develop maximise the intrinsic motivation and enjoyment of learners. Examples of game elements we have designed and implemented:
Scenario based question games, animated character scenario games, quiz games, visually appealing drag and drop games, video scenario games…
Gamification uses techniques that game designers employ to engage players and applies them to non-game experiences to motivate employees and improve engagement and loyalty to the organisation. (Yes, employee perception really changes. If employees think their training is great they think their organisation is too – well, it may not be quite that straightforward, but it certainly helps!).
Higher Level Learning uses relevant sections of the Octalysis, devised by gamification pioneer Yu-Kai Chou to ensure resources are well designed and consider what motivates staff and ensure that this is integrated into the design.
We only concentrate on intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic rewards can sometimes drive short-term motivation but in many situations, extrinsic rewards actually DECREASE motivation. Also it’s not about leaderboards and badges, it’s about providing your employees with enjoyable activities that help them learn, improve their skills and subsequently improve an organisation’s ability to compete in the marketplace.
Gamification delivers proven and tangible results, which can be measured with the analytics tools most vendors provide. Organisations that use gamification experience an increase in engagement both internally and externally as a result. This includes things like more website traffic, shorter times for adoption of new training and reduction in onboarding time.
